![]() I can't imagine this distinctly cool wine blossoming in the bottle. Readers will note the lower than normal presence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the 2011, which is typical for a year in which blenders play an important role. Sweet floral and spiced notes lead to expressive dark red berries, mocha, anise and new leather in a brilliant Opus One. Finishes brisk but a bit sour, with some spiky acidity and lingering pepper and herb notes. A brilliant, precise wine, the 2011 impresses for its energy. Spicier and leaner than the young 2012, with a strong impression of acidity and an herbal element giving a tart quality to the blackberry, graphite and leather flavors. Rather cool aromas of plum syrup, cocoa powder, licorice and fresh herbs. 71% cabernet sauvignon, 11% merlot, 9% petit verdot, 8% cabernet franc and 1% malbec." - James Suckling (May 15, 2014)ĩ0 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: This is a subtly fruity, juicy red with a pretty texture. It's full-bodied, with soft, silky tannins and a clean, fresh finish. "This is very aromatic and pretty with plum, cherry and currant aromas, plus hints of chocolate. The blend is 71% Cabernet, 11% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot/8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec." -Antonio Galloni (November 2013) Readers will note the lower than normal presence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the 2011, which is typical for a year in which blenders play an important role. Opus One 2011 Napa Valley (71 Cabernet Sauvignon, 11 Merlot, 9 Petit Verdot, 8 Cabernet Franc and 1 Malbec) The nose is powerful and harmonious. A brilliant, precise wine, the 2011 impresses for its energy. Very good wine, but there are cheaper alternatives out there."The 2011 Opus One may turn out to be one of the surprises of the year. This is not really how I want to drink wine and that's why I feel the same about DRC and Bordeaux first growths. Of course it improves with age, but older vintages are even more expensive, so the point does not change. In Japan it fetches 38.000 yen (350 dollars, 276 euro) for the last vintage and quantity is very scarce. I feel the all the hype around Opus One is due to the fact that it has become a brand more than a wine, like Louis Vuitton or Gucci. You have the same or maybe better quality with the half-priced Chadwick from Errazuriz. This is a good wine, a very good wine, and will improve with age, but I want to be very frank: it costs way too much. The tannins need still some time, but they will eventually show their class. Opus one harvested relatively early (end of september) and managed to avoid the October heat wave, producing quite an elegant styled wine (which bears anyway the California mark in the aromas and mouthfeel). In the aftertaste white pepper and dark chocolate.Ģ011 has been a tough year in California, yields were lower and berries smaller than usual. It fills the mouth well (nearly full body) and has a good acidity, even though the tannins are still a little bit rough. There's some earthiness and a herbs, but for now they are just a hint. Spicy with black fruit, sour cherry, cassis and licorice aromas. The years of the grape Likes this wine: 92 Points The wine I drank neither approached nor merited such lofty praise.ġ person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No I did not drink the wine described therein. I have read numerous tasting notes extolling the qualities of this particular wine. I was totally underwhelmed this is Opus One after all! Over the last year I have drank numerous wines, each costing a fraction of this one, which easily out-performed this bottle. The wine's texture showed that it was technically well made, but the cool vintage's problems showed through. The fine-grained, plush tannins evolve into a long, supple finish. Licorice and green pepper composed the long finish which was initially chalky. This seductive wine shows flavors of black cassis, black cherry and a hint of cocoa powder. In the mouth, the wine was silky, but the red fruit was lean, thin, and greenish. The nose promised more than the palate delivered. To me the nose was reminiscent of a well-made but off-year St. On the nose: aromas of red fruits, cocoa, and green pepper predominated. Color was garnet throughout, no bricking but there was a slight clear corona on the rim. Wine was clear and bottle had some fine sediment. ![]() Gift from a client and shared with my wine buddy Art.
